the book is going

Today's Guardian suggests to me that the book format as such is soon going to change. As written about already in my readG blog.

That is "the book" as a continuous text, assumed to be read in sequence as published. I think this now happens very rarely. Skip through the contents or index and find something to start with. Is fiction all that different? I doubt it.

Books as in printed pages will continue but as spun off from the mess that is the web. Mess as in popup ads, still very annoying.

Sony have announced a new Reader with support for EPUB and Adobe Digital Editions. More on this later.

Imagining 2010

I have started a web page at InXpress about the "Going of the Book". This is set in 2010 so is imagined. Could be a useful way to define things as if they have happened. At the moment I am still puzzled as to what Adobe is trying to do but things could be clearer later. The Postscript / PDF phase is more or less over from a technical point of view.

Hello Spiders text ok so far

The text version of Hello Spiders assumes a time space till the end of the year so that during this could be seen as more or less one moment. Maybe it will not tkae as long as to 2010 as in Timequake.

The Online Information show could be soon as I imagine it. Jimmy Wales is the keynote speaker. I am keeping an open mind about the forms of knowledge relating to the show but it loosens things up quite a lot.

Guardian Talk is getting interesting. The topic "why blog?" in Media has gained some confidence. I think i will concentrate on journalism for a while and leave academic writing for later.

blogging about blogging

Just for a while this blog will concentrate on blogging. The "autobiography" course had a mention for blogging so I will try to follow it up with some online examples. This may be a form of "blended" learning. e-learning has failed several times so far but keeps growing anyway. The "blended" description is about mixing it with real life instruction and experience of something.

It has been said that we should assume nothing is ever read that we write. I tend to start a new blog for any problem situation. Maybe it clarifies something. There are too many of them now so I just change the scope. Apologies for the confusion.

Some of it is autobiography. He may include memoirs of earlier careers, but just to show some basis for current claims. Sometimes the text turns up again in Guardian Media on a Monday, tightly edited and including some responses to comments.

Another blog gets to Kurt Vonnegut quite quickly.

Course has started at Lancs. Now at Crows in the centre. No wifi for the summer holiday makers on campus. What a swiz.

The cafes are where I thought but can't find languages.

So far the approach to autobiography is entirely pen and paper. No screens, but this is ok as a holiday. Suggestion is to go back at least ten years for objectivity. sounds reasonable, but blogs still have a place.

Start on a text

I have started a "hello spiders" version of an auto-biography.

It extends a graphic view of the blogs I sometimes update.

It is more of a current situation than a chronology, though this may follow.

Later today there should be a guide to other blogs that I work on or at least a diagram as part of my learn9 website. This is about learning so one current idea is to make the blogs at least appear more coherent. I have tended to just start another one and then not continue.

Back in Tottenham Court Road

In London for Motown Show at Hackney Empire and Book Fair at Excel. Days between to check out TCR. Much as ever. Be The Reds still in the spot Cyberia once was. Speed test shows 4meg. That is actual 4 meg. At home I am told I get 2meg but the speed test shows a half.

Today's Guardian reports that BT will claim 8 meg for most of the UK later this year. BT also claim that 1.5 meg is enough for TV quality video. Could be subject to verification, that one. 8 meg may be enough if you get sole access.

Fortunately I have a lot of old stuff on VHS.

Motown Show was excellent. The cast seem to like the Temptations numbers best. Someone should write a new song for them.

Acrobat 7 exists

Yesterday I checked out Acrobat 7 and it seems to work as expected. Comments in Reader, JDF in Professional.

I think different aspects of my life will come together. More time travel is in order. For example I created a PDF form and this produced an XML file suitable as an email attachment. Looked at as text it is not very different to a Wordstar file also known as "comma delimited", as exported by dBase in the '80s. Obviously Adobe have reasons why a server based approach is even more wonderful but text data attached to email seems ok to me.

Well this is ok for changing dates. No problem at all. Disaster as an audit trail but fine for autobiography 1999-2004.
